If working as a hotel manager there are many different responsibilities that you would be taking on. If the hotel is a small individually ran hotel then there may only be one manager instead of several managers of different departments. No matter if you are the manager of a certain department or of an entire hotel there are certain things you need to consider. Some of these things include the skill set you should have before entering into it as a career and the interests you should have to fully enjoy the job. As well as all the personal requirements there are also qualifications you can take to further your prospects in the sector.
Some of the different requirements you will have to have and the different qualifications you can gain when becoming a hotel manager or owner are;
- Requirements The different personal requirements you will have to have when becoming a hotelier are;
o Organisation This is an obvious quality that the manager must possess especially if over seeing many different departments. This is because they will be responsible for the level of service given by all staff under the different departments. If they are a manager of a certain department then they will need to be sure that all of the staff in their department are fully trained and able to carry out the tasks required of them.
o Efficient They need to have the ability to stay calm under pressure and also be able to solve problems as quickly as possible. This is because if a customer has an issue regarding service or facilities then they would be required to solve the problem with as little stress as possible being caused for the guest.
o Budgeting If in charge of the whole hotel then they should be able to arrange the annual budget each year. As well as this they should make sure each department sticks to its budget each month. This is a major factor in making sure the hotel does not exceed its spending budget, if the hotel were to over spend then it could put them in financial difficulty so it is a fairly big responsibility.
- Education There are different courses you can take when entering the industry of hotel management and each one has different entry requirements. Some of the degrees you can take include; hospitality management, hotel and hospitality management and international hospitality management. To gain access to these courses you generally need to have 5 GCSEs and at least 2 A Levels, although it varies from each College/University what you will need.
Although there is the option of gaining qualifications in the area it is also possible for you to work your way up from a more junior position to a management role. If between the ages of 16 and 24 then you could enter into an apprentice scheme that are ran by many hoteliers.
