There is a long history of hotels all around the world from the traditional British hotels to the extravagant movie themed hotels in the USA. There is such a great variation in the hotel types now because throughout the years peoples tastes have changed greatly and so the hotels have changed along with what the public wanted. So because of fashions in the past there is now a greater selection in hotels than ever before.
Below is a history of hotels and how they have changed over the years to provide the varied selection of services and styles they now do.
The beginning
The start of hotels in the UK didnt really begin until the coaching industry was the main way of transporting goods in the 19th Century. This is because in the start the hotels were known as coaching inns and would be used mainly by those delivering goods over a long distance. Even at this point the American hotels were larger and tended to offer more services than the English equivalent. As there was very little need for hotels from tourism point of view the hotels that did exist became entirely coach orientated offering services such as horse changes and a bed with food to guests.
Development of hotels
Major developments of hotel accommodation in the UK didnt really begin until railway travel had become highly popular and more available to the public. This was because there were then many more people travelling around the UK so the need for accommodation was much greater. This is when there began to be varying degrees of class in hotels because it wasnt just the rich that were using the railway service any more so there was more call for cheaper hotels. Over the years as public transport was being developed constantly so accommodation such as hotels were also being developed and expanded to provide for the demand.
Recent history
Through out the earlier part of the 20th Century when seaside holidays were extremely popular was when the great developments in accommodation began. This was around the time that holiday camps were developed such as Butlins and Pontins and they proved very popular. In more recent years travel to Cities such as London has become more popular during the 80s and 90s is when many chains of hotels started to take shape with large redundant office blocks being modified to become hotels in these popular tourist areas.
